Domestic Issues: Accommodation, Bank Account, National Insurance...
Obviously finding a job is an important aspect of life in the UK, however there are other issues which you face instantly. You may end up sleeping on a friends couch or staying in a hostel initially, but eventually you're going to need to find a place to stay on a more permanent basis. Although it's probably the best un-kept secret in the Expat community, www.gumtree.co.uk is a great site for accommodation. Often you'll find house/flat shares which can often miss out going through the administration of using an estate agent, especially if you haven't secured your first contract (agents generally need a reference from your employer confirming your employment). Otherwise, please see our accommodation website guide for some of the more popular sites for accommodation.
Cash in hand jobs are generally a thing of the past - at least in the professional sectors with which we deal (those looking to work in a bar may have a different experience)! This means opening a bank account is essential. Most banks require paperwork which simply won't be able to obtain, however HSBC are a popular choice with the expats as they have an offer focused on expats which does not rely on you showing UK utility bills! If you are reading this and you are still in your native country, visit a HSBC branch (or a bank affiliated with HSBC) and they will be able to assist, alternatively, visit the following link and you will see the "Passport" and "Basic Bank Account" options: travel information
Once you've managed to find somewhere to live and open a bank account, one last step to living in the UK is to apply for your National Insurance number. This is a fairly simple process, contact your nearest Job Centre Plus Office to arrange an appointment. For more information, please visit the Jobscentre Plus
Alternatively, join Lesters! We will fast-track you National Insurance number and provide the necessary reference letter to open a bank account, as well as put more £££s in your pocket!!!
